Second, you will need to have drinking water. As weather related events are announced be sure to fill up containers and tubs full of water. Have a water purification device that can filter this water as needed. There are cheap ones that can filter hundreds of gallons of water to take care of the water needs.
Be sure to have some survival items at home. Blankets for warmth are a big plus because the heating in your home might go out because electricity and gas lines are turned off. If you need a certain medication, be sure that you have extra and have ways of storing it properly. Learn your first aid in case you need to use that as well.
Boredom will become a huge factor because there won't be much to do. Have things like board games or books you haven't read on hand just in case you need them to keep yourself entertained. Have some activities for the kids as well.
