Home Furniture: The Use of Color

Imagine life without color: you wouldn't know night from day, stop from go, dead from alive. These and much more are the significance and relevance of color in our lives. In the same way, people react to colors. They are moved by it, and respond to it according to what emotions a particular color may evoke in the seer.

Color gives a room personality. It give furniture life and creates an atmosphere and character that you may desire to have for a particular area of your home. Color creates visual illusion. Color can create the illusion of having more space than reality allows. Brighter space. Cozier space. Narrower space. etc etc.

A good designer or housewife know their colors when it comes to decorating and home furnishing. If either would like to improve their home, they mustn't be afraid of using a bit of color. They must understand that in decorating a room or picking out other items of home decor, color is extremely significant.

But, there are some basic principles that must be remembered with working with colors. When you are working with colors in home decorating, there are two basic types--warm and cool colors or tones.

What are warm and cool colors? How do they affect a room? Warm colors are centered around yellows. For example, orange, brown, green. Of course it only includes those in these categories that have a bit or a yellowish (sometimes reddish) tone to them. Veridian green. Olive green. Burgundy red. Dark browns. Red orange, etc. Contrasting colors, or cool colors, are based more on blues, pinks, purples, and lighter red and yellow colors. Each of these categories creates a very different mood for the surroundings. Warm tones create a very heavy look--very severe. They tend to make the room seem a bit smaller. However, designers love these colors for areas such as a library or a study. I personally love the color in a kitchen.

Cool colors on the other hand, are better for use with decorating rooms for youngsters. Cool colors give the area the light and breezy feeling. These colors also make the room seem a bit larger than it is and less severe. Light-hearted and carefree. These cool colors are good conductors or light.
